What is Surface Runoff Water?
Surface runoff water consists of rainwater and other atmospheric water that flows from terrain surfaces, rooftops and paved areas. Unlike domestic wastewater it is not directly polluted, but it can carry contaminants from surfaces — oils, heavy metals and sediments.
Proper management of surface runoff is essential for protecting building foundations, preventing floods and maintaining the quality of surface and groundwater within the municipality.
